About J Miguel

J Miguel (Jose Miguel Muñoz) is a Guatemalan, Chicago born and raised singer/songwriter from the Humboldt Park area. His musical journey began by becoming a part of a Mexican-Folkloric Dance group ‘Flor de Corazon’ located in Cicero, IL from the age of 6 through 19. After picking up the alto saxophone at the age of 12, an obsession for Jazz grew and he went on to play the tenor saxophone for a total of 6 years. While attending UIC College Prep in Chicago, he participated in the Jazz Ensemble for three years, playing lead tenor and competing in Berkley’s College of Music Jazz Festival in Boston for the last two years of high school. At the age of 13 he participated in the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s 2009/2010 Season Tosca.

The Summer of 2014, right before attending Dominican University, J Miguel began taking the guitar more seriously, teaching himself how to play guitar, as he started composing his own songs. While at DU, J Miguel participated in retreats that helped him grow as an individual and participated in the Liturgical Choir for 3 years which helped him find his voice. By the time May 2018 rolled in, a BS in Chemistry was earned and his career as a part time Chemistry teacher for Midtown Center for Boys in Bucktown IL, was in order.

J Miguel’s music drifts between pop, indie, R&B, and Latin influences, weaving stories of transformation, love, and self-discovery.

His discography reflects a journey of growth and resilience. His debut album, Raining Euphoria, explored love with a youthful innocence, capturing the first sparks of his storytelling voice. With his second album, Aurora, J Miguel entered a more vulnerable chapter — one marked by heartbreak and the loss of self-worth, where he gave too much of himself for the sake of others. That struggle along with others to come became the foundation for his artistic rebirth.

Now, with his third full-length album underway, J Miguel begins to bridge the darkness of his past with the light of renewal. Singles like Hollow, Dusk, and A Cool Breeze embody this turning point, balancing introspection with hope. With poetic bilingual lyricism, soaring melodies, and genre-bending soundscapes, J Miguel creates music that feels both intimate and expansive — a reminder that even in the darkest moments, transformation is always possible.

“My goal continues to be the same: to connect with people in one way or another, whether it’s through a verse, a melody, or a feeling. We’re all on this Earth together. By listening to my music, I know we can all find a small moment to live in harmony.” - J Miguel
